Chess analysis board
- Thinking…
No moves yet. Move a piece, or paste a FEN or a PGN.
white to move
Paste a FEN or a whole game in PGN, or just start moving pieces. At every position Stockfish draws its best move on the board and shows you the evaluation and its top three lines, right here in your browser.
How to use the analysis board
The board starts from the initial position. Move a piece and Stockfish answers from there. To look at something specific, hit Paste FEN or PGN, or just press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac) anywhere outside a text field.
A PGN opens at the start of the game. Step through the game with the move list, and play your own move whenever you want to try an idea. It replaces the moves that came after it. Undo takes it back, and Flip turns the board round.
Copy gives you the FEN, the PGN or a link to the position, ready to send to a friend or your coach.
Want every move of a chess.com or Lichess game labelled, blunders and brilliant moves included? That’s the game review. Only have a screenshot or a diagram from a book? Upload it to Image to board and you get a board you can play, with a free account.
What Stockfish shows you
The arrow on the board is Stockfish’s best move. The bar, and the number next to each line, are the evaluation from White’s side. +1.20 means White is a bit more than a pawn up, -0.50 means Black is slightly better, and M3 means mate in three.
Below that you get its three best lines, each with its evaluation, and the depth, which is how many moves ahead it has looked. The depth keeps climbing while you watch, and it gets further on a fast laptop than on an old phone.
Stockfish 19 runs right on your device. The page downloads it once, about 2 MB, and nothing you play is sent anywhere.
Keep it for after the game. Engine help in a game you’re playing breaks the rules on chess.com and Lichess, and over the board too.
Open a position by link
Every position has its own link, under Copy and then Copy link to this position. You can also write one yourself by putting a FEN after ?fen= in the address. For example, https://chesslord.app/tools/chess-analysis-board?fen=r1bqkbnr/pppp1ppp/2n5/4p3/4P3/5N2/PPPP1PPP/RNBQKB1R+w+KQkq+-+2+3 opens the position after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6.
Everything the analysis board does
The best move and the evaluation
Stockfish 19 draws its best move as an arrow and shows the evaluation in big type, in pawns from White’s side, with a few words on who is better and by how much.
Three candidate lines
Under the evaluation you get the three moves Stockfish likes most, each with its score and the line that follows, so you can hold your idea up against the engine’s. The settings icon lets you show one, two or three lines and choose how long Stockfish thinks, from 5 to 60 seconds.
The evaluation bar
The bar beside the board fills with White or Black as the evaluation swings, which tells you at a glance who is pressing.
Paste a FEN or a PGN
Press Ctrl+V anywhere on the page, or open Paste FEN or PGN. A line under the box tells you whether it read a FEN or a PGN before you load it, and a PGN that breaks halfway still opens up to its last legal move.
Step through a game
Use the arrows under the board, the left and right keys, Home and End, the mouse wheel over the board, or click any move in the list.
Try your own ideas
Play a different move at any point and Stockfish follows your line. Back to the game puts the original moves back with one click.
Copy and share
Copy gives you a link to the position, the FEN or the whole game as PGN. Whoever opens the link lands on the same position.
Flip and promote
Flip turns the board round, and so does the F key. When a pawn reaches the last rank you choose the new piece right over the square.
Runs on your device
Stockfish loads once, about 2 MB, after the page is on screen. Switch it off with the Engine button when you just want to move pieces around.
What it does, and what it doesn’t
- Start from the initial position, a FEN or a PGN
- Stockfish’s best move as an arrow at every position
- An evaluation bar, the top three lines and the search depth
- Undo, flip the board, and copy the FEN, the PGN or a link to the position
- Set up a position piece by piece, since there’s no board editor yet
- Label every move of a game, which is what the game review does
- Read a position from an image, which is what image to board does
- Save anything, so copy the FEN, the PGN or the link to keep it
Nothing leaves your device, and nothing is kept once you close the page.
